The moment before the explosion, I realise what will happen.
Tiny whispers of death run through me, reminding me of the reasons why I dropped out of the so called, “Human Race” and went to live and thrive in the forest with my Others.
I pulled my mask down over my face and stare forward, waiting for the slight rush of air as I hear the squeal of cars and feel the pinprick of death run over me and raise the hairs on my arms.
A hint of fear runs through me and I turn my head away and see behind me the faint shadows of my Others.
My Others is what I call the forest animals that I live and hunt with as well as care for. They are the “failed” experiments created by scientists everywhere and then released into the Great Forest to die.
But I found them. I saved them.
A slight nudge against my side lets me know of the appearance of Rasha, one of my Others, a DNA experiment that was meant to be a cross between a snow leopard and a tortoise. The snow leopards were dying out, and scientists wanted to preserve them, so they tried to combine the two’s DNA to create a snow leopard that could survive for 200+ years.
What they instead got was experiment R454, whom I renamed Rasha. She had the prolonged life, still quite young and agile at around 375 years old, but was a dark forest green instead of a pearly white-gray colour. I ran my hand over her deep fur and saw her open her mouth slightly, displaying her keen white fangs.
Humans these days, Hm?
So, I decided to make each chapter about the car crash, but from a bunch of different perspectives. Also, I renamed the story 12 seconds because supposedly each chapter takes 12 seconds. It might fluctuate a bit, but never mind that. What do people think?
Oh, and the song for this chapter is Bronte by Gotye. Watch the video because I feel like that more describes what I was trying to get at rather than the song, but the song is excellent so listen to that as well.

I love where this is going, as a beginning of a story, Jess. I really enjoy your subtle introduction to the Others, which creates an effectively altered reality from our own by alluding to a backstory we will get to hear more of as the narrative unfolds. This makes for engaging storytelling.
The rotating perspective of the narration around a common event has lots of potential to create a rich Other World, too, I think. It’s also a great tradition in modern literature. William Faulkner’s Sound and the Fury (for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize), and many of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ works mine the same territory (he won a Nobel for his contribution to the creation of Magical Realism), and could prove to be meaningful influences on your writing.
The incorporation of the musical influence is something that could be cool to see integrated into the storytelling if it were to take the shape of an audiobook/podcast, or video project.
Looking forward to seeing where the story goes, Jess. Thanks for sharing it!
